Mag. Dr. Hüseyin I. Çiçek
Priv.-Doz. (Privatdozent) Mag. Dr. Hüseyin Çiçek is a political scientist and scholar of religion with a PhD and habilitation, specializing in authoritarian regimes, political violence, and ideological transformation processes.
He completed his habilitation in 2021 at the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg, having previously earned his doctorate at the University of Innsbruck. From 2021 to 2022, he served as deputy and executive director of the Institute for Islamic-Theological Studies at the University of Vienna. He is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Research Centre Religion and Transformation (RaT).
He studied law, political science, philosophy, and religious studies in Innsbruck, New Orleans, and Erlangen. His research integrates perspectives from political science, ideology critique, and sociology. His doctoral dissertation examined martyrdom, identity, and violence in Christianity and Islam; his habilitation focused on religion, migration, and digital antisemitism.
Çiçek has taught at the University of Vienna; at the University of Education Weingarten in Alevi Theology; at Sigmund Freud University Vienna (SFU); and as a Fellow at the London Centre for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism.
His current projects include studies on antisemitic discourses after 7 October 2023, on the geopolitics of religious policy, and on the transformation of Islamist movements.
